If people haven't noticed yet - I'm always looking to buy a new car. I'm trying to sell my B6 Passat to get something else. Ideally a wagon for my family that consists of two 80-pound Huskies - but I can't help but want this. Someone please talk me out of it.
2003 Range Rover. 18x,xxx miles. $6500.

ehh fuck it! Go for it, seems like it would at least be nice to drive in all that luxury when the air suspension isn't slowly blowing up.

my first question was: "has the air suspension been fixed/replaced?"
My dignity vs. a "hellaflush'ed" broken Range. such a hard decision.

Bushings, ball joints, struts, air compressor, transmission, vanos crap and timing chain crap, oil leaks from everywhere, every part in the cooling system, everything in the interior, $1200 water-cooled alternator (even the new ones were bad half the time), instrument cluster.
Those are all things I could do in my sleep on these. Parts are not cheap and they're not terribly fun to work on.
Having said all that. I love range rovers. Would at least consider buying this with the expectation that I would lose my ass on it.

Hello, do you like being poor?

Air suspension is only the first of many issues... and it isn't as expensive as you might think. You can replace one air spring for $1,500ish...
Mine has cost $4,600 in repairs over the last 2 years and another $3k or so in regular maintenance... and this one is 3 years older than mine.
I would budget $3-4k annually in dealer visits (repairs + maintenance) and expect 12-14 mpg against a 22-24 gal tank that costs around $90 to fill with premium each time. (I fill 2-3x per month so that's another $3-4k annually.) Insurance is also expensive since it's a high profile vehicle that's often carelessly driven and virtually any accident will total it. If you can handle all that, go for it; it's an amazing car with an excellent driving position and impressive capabilities and I truly believe it's the best car I've owned out of 22 total.

How much is a coil spring swap?

Best. Comment. Ever.

I really appreciate the input. And admittedly - I'm not going to be as handy as you and fixing things myself - so I'd assume I have to add in labor costs.
Ugh - I'm like a teenage girls in a jewelry shop - shiny things distract me and I just want them to work out.
This is why I love Oppo - insight into things I'd never expect

Boom I just saved you $700 off the price of one air spring. Also make sure you have enough money for maintenance. It's gonna cost you.

That one looks really nice, but if you think that B5 is expensive to repair. Just wait until you have a Range Rover.

It will break. Frequently. And expensively.

I know the feeling. I suggest a 210 wagon, e320 with 4matic, they're a little boring and not the best to look at but they are great to drive and quite reliable. I know I'm probably starting to sound like a broken record here on Oppo"Mercedes this, Mercedes that", but I love them because I think they're great , not because I'm paid to.

The moment something bad happens to the engine, yank it out and drop in an LS1!

I've looked into this. Realistically not feasible. This one has a BMW m62 anyways.

Seems like a bit better deal.

This year has the BMW motor and transmission, and from my understanding it is problematic.

Seriously? Buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee LTD with a Selec Trac Transmission..not the Quadra Trac...its going to be nice...and not bust you with bills. Range Rover....not really in your Range.
You have more Sense than money..that said offer them $1500 Cash and walk away if they say no

Yup. Spring swap is definitely what I would do if I didn't have CarMax. The problem is then you get a bunch of RR purists saying stuff like "THESE CARS ARE MADE TO HAVE AIR SUSPENSION GOD DAMMIT" etc etc etc. Not that I would care.

only 22 cars? you really need to get out more.

RR purist is also known as a pedestrian. Just sayin'
